Potpourri

Café in Paris is an oil on canvas painting of a night scene on a Parisian street from an earlier era. In the foreground a man and woman approach the cafe, so their backs are to us. In front of the Cafe Royal Paris, which is at the left center of the painting, people are seated at tables on the sidewalk, and behind them we can see other customers in the lighted café. Near the lower center of the painting, two women stand on the sidewalk; the women are wearing white caps and long dresses. The faces of the women are indistinct. The green of the trees and shrubs, the navy blue of the sky, and the bright yellow of the café lights dominate the scene.

A Stroll in the Rain is an oil on canvas painting of a woman walking in the rain with her dog. The painting is set in the evening and features a woman, who is wearing a white hat, a pale blue blouse, and cornflower blue long skirt. She has her back to us, and to her left walks a small black dog, wearing a red collar. They stroll down a well-lit street between two-story brown buildings on both sides of the narrow street. The gaslights on the street illuminate the scene, shedding a warm glow across the wet street in front of the woman.

Full Table is an oil on canvas painting of a table on which several objects are set. The table itself is a dark gray, but from the right corner hangs a white napkin or small tablecloth. On the left is a white, lit candle in a glass tumbler. Next to it is a blue vase filled with three orange tulips and a dozen small white flowers. And next to the blue vase is a larger brown vase, this one filled with eight large red flowers with black centers. Green foliage fills the gaps between the flowers. To the right of the brown vase is a flute (glass), filled with champagne. In front of these objects are a green apple and a slightly smaller red apple. The background of the painting is black, setting off the bright colors of the objects on the table.

Night Blooms is an oil on canvas painting of two glass vases filled with flowers. The vase on the left holds four large orange blooms; it is flanked on the left by short brown vase in which there is one orange flower. In the larger glass vase on the right are three orange tulips and two white roses. A white lit candle in a wine glass stands between the two vases. Two fallen blooms and a few petals lie on the table in the foreground. The background of the painting is black, suggesting a night scene.

The Rose is an oil on canvas painting of a large orange-red rose with light green leaves in the center of the work. We see to the upper left of the rose a splash of pale blue mingled with light yellow and purple that merges to the left of the rose with bright orange and yellow strokes. Across the bottom of the painting is a “field” of dozens of red, poppy-like flowers.

Stil Life is an oil on canvas painting of a large cobalt blue vase filled with five black-eyed Susans, two large orange blooms, eight orange buds, and dark greenery. The vase sits on a reddish brown wooden table in front of a window through which we can see the bright green leaves of trees in the yard. Positioned at the edge of table to the left of the vase is a white cup, and to the right is the head of a black-eyed Susan.
